Dr. Tom Chatfield, A Critical Thinker
Dr. Tom Chatfield is a British author, broadcaster, and tech philosopher, renowned for his extensive work on digital culture and as a critical thinker. Born in 1980, he pursued his BA, MPhil, and doctorate at St John’s College, Oxford, where he also taught before transitioning to a career in writing and editing.
His debut book, “Fun Inc.” (2010), delves into the culture of video games. This was followed by several other works exploring digital culture, including “How to Thrive in the Digital Age” (2012) and “Live This Book!” (2015). His writings have been translated into over thirty languages, reflecting their global impact.
In 2019, Chatfield ventured into fiction with his novel “This Is Gomorrah” (titled “The Gomorrah Gambit” in the U.S.), a techno-thriller set in the dark net. The novel was recognized as a Sunday Times thriller of the month, shortlisted for the CWA Steel Dagger award, and won France’s 2020 Prix Douglas Kennedy for the best foreign thriller.
Beyond his publications, Chatfield is a prominent speaker and consultant on technology and new media. He delivered a notable TED Global talk in 2010 titled “7 ways games reward the brain.” His expertise has led him to roles such as associate editor at Prospect magazine, Fellow at The School of Life, and guest faculty member at Oxford’s Saïd Business School.
In 2023, Chatfield was appointed Chair of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS), underscoring his influence in the literary community.
His most recent work, “Wise Animals” (2024), examines the co-evolution of humanity and technology, further cementing his role as a leading thinker in the intersection of technology and society.
